Description

Eyebright (common name for Euphrasia) is a genus of about 450 species of herbaceous flowering plants in the family Orobanchaceae (formerly included in the Scrophulariaceae), with a cosmopolitan distribution. They are semi-parasitic on grasses.

Eyebright flowers usually are borne terminally, are zygomorphic, and have a lower petal shaped like a lip. The plant is a hardy, aromatic herb with erect, branching stems that grow to four feet. It can be biennial or perennial, depending on climate.  Many species are found in alpine or sub-alpine meadows where snow is common. It's wrinkled, grayish-green leaves have scalloped edges, a velvety pebbled texture, and grows in pairs.

The plant blooms in late summer and autumn with whorls of flowers that range in color from pure white through pinkish and pale blue to lilac and purplish-pink. The most common flower colours are purple, blue-white, and violet. Some species have yellow markings on the lower petal to act as a guide to pollinating insects. The blossoms, which grow on on long spikes, have scent glands.

The common name refers to the plant's use in treating eye infections.

Herbalists use eyebright as a poultice with or without concurrent administration of a tea for the redness, swelling, and visual disturbances. Parts used include the leaf, the stem, and small pieces of the flowers. Typical preparations include a warm compress or tea. Eyebright preparations are also available as an extract or capsule.

Aside from this herb being used for eyestrain, it is also used to relieve inflammation caused by colds, coughs, sinus infections, sore throats and hay fever. It can be used for workings that are related to appetite, gallbladder, hormones, menopause, PMS, digestive system, sacral chakra, and menstrual pain/cramps. It can also be used to conceive, balance hormones, relieve stress, strengthen kidneys, treat hysteria, clear the eyes, improve visual perception, overcome physical fatigue, regulate menstrual cycles, and strengthen the stomach.

The plant was known to classical herbalists, but then was not referred to until mentioned again in 1305. Nicholas Culpeper assigned it to the sign of Leo, claiming that it strengthened the brain. It was also used to treat bad memory and vertigo.

According to Culpeper, eyebright powdered seeds, when drunk in wine, "is an admirable help to provoke lust." The leaves, fresh and dried, have been used to flavor wine. Drinking wine infused with eyebright flowers or leaves can cause headaches though.

In magick, Eyebright is used in making magic condensers for general magic work. Brew a simple tea and anoint the eyelids daily to induce clairvoyant visions. Eyebright can also be used for aiding focus, clairvoyance/visualization, clarity, consecration/cleaning, divination, lunar magick, mirror magick, and for workings that have to do with positivity, wisdom, mental balance, spirituality, and healing.

It can also be used to arouse lust and to cause nightmares when used negatively.
